Meet the 2025 Lois Hole Memorial Awards Winners

Community Leadership Award – Canterbury Foundation

 Since emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canterbury Foundation has reopened its doors to intergenerational volunteers and community groups, once again becoming a vibrant hub of connection and learning.

In partnership with the Centre for Family Literacy, Canterbury hosts the Do-Re-Mi, ABC music literacy program – a joyful weekly gathering that brings together senior residents, children, and parents for songs, rhymes, crafts, and conversation. With nearly 30 residents participating each week, children gain confidence, seniors find companionship, and families share meaningful intergenerational moments.

Canterbury’s warm, inclusive environment makes it a true leader in fostering community through literacy and connection.

Adult Learner Award – Dolce Lee

Originally from Taiwan, Dolce Lee is a dedicated mother, wife, learner, and volunteer. Since

 CFL in 2022, Dolce has embraced every opportunity to grow, beginning in the Adult Tutor Program, joining group classes, and volunteering in family literacy programs.

Her determination and enthusiasm have led her to complete her Early Childhood Education Level 1, improve her English skills across the board, and gain valuable experience in the childcare field. Dolce’s inspiring journey has even encouraged her husband to become a CFL volunteer himself – proof of the positive ripple effect she brings wherever she goes.

Family Learner Award – Darlene Frank

Darlene Frank is a grandmother whose commitment to her family and community has sparked real change. In caring for her two grandsons, she joined the Story Sprouts program, which nurtured both learning and connection during a time of post-pandemic isolation.

Inspired by the experience, Darlene went on to create a local playgroup, securing a space, gathering materials, and personally inviting families to join. She has since taken on the challenge of launching a community drama program for older children – ensuring it remains welcoming and accessible to all.

Darlene’s passion, leadership, and community spirit are a shining example of family literacy in action.
